Age and Youth (Pablo Casal: pp 119-121)

It’s very rare that people think like Casals. Most people are thinking about retirement on their age coming. They always think what they have to do after retirement or how are the rest of their lives going to be. On the contrary, Casals desires to work; even through he is nearly a hundred year old. He looks around the surrounding as much beautiful as it is. He has a positive attitude on living and working. He, fortunately, works on the thing he loves – Music, so that he never gives up on working.

He said; “working is life” and “to retire means to die.” That means work is a part of his life. He can live because of work. Aging doesn’t mean getting old, so there is no retirement for him. By the way, I can’t imagine how life is going to be after retirement, if I don’t work or I can’t do anything even I suppose to do. It sounds pretty terrible.

Sea is a symbolic of changing because sea never idles. There is new wave after the old one gone. It reflect to Casals’s live that he never stop working. He said; “it is never the same” and “sea is the process of change.” Life never ends, unless unbreathing. By the way, someone told me that “changing is symbolic of being alive.” I definitely agree. Stop changing is like being death in spite of breathing.
